User experience design is the discipline concerned with how a product feels to use. The work is heavily research-based. If you are targeting roles that include UI responsibilities, your portfolio must show visual consistency and an understanding of design systems. Reviewers will look at whether your typography choices follow a clear hierarchy, whether your spacing follows a grid, whether your components are consistent across screens and whether you understand accessibility requirements such as colour contrast ratios under WCAG 2.2.
Tool fluency
Figma is the industry standard tool for both UX and UI work in the UK market as of 2025. You should be comfortable with auto-layout, component variants, prototyping and the developer handoff features. Additional familiarity with tools such as Maze or Useberry for unmoderated testing, or Miro for collaborative workshops, strengthens a portfolio narrative considerably.
A portfolio case study that walks a reviewer through a flawed first solution, the user research that revealed the flaw and the revised design that addressed it is worth more than ten screens of polished work with no documented rationale. Showing that you can be wrong and correct yourself is the clearest possible evidence of professional judgement.
The Self-Taught Route: What It Offers and Where It Falls Short
The self-taught route into UX design in the UK is genuinely viable. The discipline emerged from a combination of cognitive psychology, information architecture and graphic design, and many of its most respected practitioners entered through adjacent fields rather than formal design education. YouTube channels, community courses, bootcamps and the extensive free resources published by the Nielsen Norman Group and the Interaction Design Foundation provide real learning value.
The limitations of self-teaching are structural rather than motivational. Without a framework, it is easy to develop deep knowledge in one area while remaining unaware of significant gaps in another. A self-taught designer may become highly competent in Figma while never having structured a proper moderated usability test. They may learn visual design principles thoroughly while having only a surface understanding of the accessibility legislation that UK public sector bodies are legally required to comply with under the Public Sector Bodies Accessibility Regulations 2018. They may have no way of demonstrating to an employer that their knowledge has been assessed by an independent body.
