Course overview

The Level 3 Award in Education and Training is the standard starting point for anyone moving into teaching or training in the further education and skills sector. It suits people already delivering training informally, subject specialists moving into teaching, and career changers.

You take one unit from a group of three, and every one of the three requires you to be observed teaching. The route this qualification is built around here is the microteach: you deliver at least one hour of teaching, of which at least fifteen minutes is watched and assessed live by a qualified member of the delivery team. That means you would not need to hold a teaching post or have a class of your own, which is what makes the qualification open to people starting out. It also means the Award cannot be completed by written work alone.

Enrolment is closed while we put that observed session in place. We will not take a fee for a qualification we cannot yet assess. Register your interest and we will tell you as soon as it opens, and what you will need for it.

Entry requirements

  • You must be 19 or over at the start of the course. There are no formal entry qualifications.
  • You must deliver a live teaching session and be observed. The awarding organisation requires at least one hour of microteaching, including at least fifteen minutes observed and assessed by a member of the delivery team who holds a teaching qualification. Written work alone cannot meet it, and a recording you make on your own is not the same thing. Enrolment is closed while we put that arrangement in place, so register your interest and we will contact you when it opens.

How you are assessed

Your work is assessed by our qualified assessors, internally quality assured, and externally quality assured by NCFE. Assessment is against the criteria published in the qualification specification, and your assessor tells you what is needed before you start each unit.

For what happens after you submit: who marks it, who checks the marking, how long feedback takes and what to do if you disagree with a decision, see how assessment works.

If you need an adjustment to how you are assessed, for a disability or any other reason, ask us before you begin. We arrange adjustments under our Reasonable Adjustments policy, and you can request one online.

How we assess and quality assure is set out in DAIS-POL-016 Assessment and Internal Quality Assurance.

How you study, and what you need

You study online through our virtual learning environment, which is where the teaching material, your assessment submissions, your feedback and your progress all live. You work at your own pace, with tutor support throughout. Everyone completes a short online induction before starting an assessed unit.

Operating system Windows 10 or macOS 10.15 or later

Registration and your certificate
