Human resources is full of people who arrived sideways. Someone in a small company ends up handling contracts and absence because nobody else will, and five years later they are doing the job without ever having been taught it. It works until they apply somewhere larger and are asked what they hold.
The qualification
The Level 3 Diploma in Skills for Business: Human Resources is awarded by NCFE and carries the Ofqual number 601/2649/8. It is the largest of the four qualifications we opened in September 2026: 540 guided learning hours and 900 total qualification time.
That size is the point. HR is not a subject you can cover in an Award, because the consequences of getting it wrong are legal rather than merely awkward.
What it covers
The practical work of human resources: recruitment, records, and supporting people through employment. Not the strategy that gets written about, but the work that actually fills the week, which is also the work an employer is hiring for at this level.
It is graded, and that is unusual here
The other three Level 3 qualifications we opened alongside this one are achieved or not yet achieved. This diploma is graded: the six business units are marked pass, merit or distinction, while the three human resources units are achieved or not yet achieved. It is worth knowing before you start, because it changes how you approach the evidence in those six units: a distinction is not simply a pass done neatly, and the criteria say what the difference is.
Who it is for
People already doing HR work without the qualification, office managers whose role has quietly become HR, and people moving into the field from administration. There are no formal entry requirements, though the qualification assumes reading and writing at around Level 2, and the minimum age is 16.
How it is assessed
Portfolio, marked by our assessors and quality assured by NCFE. No written examination. Because it is graded, the feedback tells you what would move a piece of work up rather than simply whether it passed.
Time and fee
Online, self-paced, no fixed deadlines. The fee is 995 pounds. At 540 guided learning hours and 900 total qualification time it is the longest of the four, and it is worth being honest with yourself about the hours before enrolling.
What you study, unit by unit
Nine mandatory units carry the 540 guided learning hours, sixty each. Six of them are the business skills any Level 3 administrator in a people role needs. The last three are the human resources units, and they are the reason the diploma carries this title rather than a general business one.
The six business units
Unit 1, business culture and responsibilities, covers sustainability, diversity, confidentiality and risk in a business setting: the duties an organisation has and how they land on the people who work in it. Unit 3, producing documents, is the written output of an office, from formats and templates to accuracy and version control. Unit 4, solving problems, and Unit 5, working with others, cover the method behind solving a business problem and the practical work of teams: roles, team dynamics, giving and receiving feedback, and conflict. Unit 6, communicating in a business environment, covers channel, tone and audience. Unit 9, managing and improving your own performance, is the reflective unit: reviewing your work, planning your development and evidencing it.
